Am I Having Panic Attacks · type
The Swell
The attacks are real and the fear of the next one has started. Your life has not been rearranged around them yet — which is exactly why this is the moment worth using.
What this type is
Your answers describe episodes with the shape of panic — fast onset, a peak inside a few minutes, a body in full alarm — and, alongside them, the second thing: the part of you that is now watching for the next one. The body-scanning. The ordinary skipped heartbeat read as a warning. The bottle of water, the tablet in the bag, the phone kept charged. What your answers do not yet describe is a month rearranged around avoidance. That gap is the most useful thing on this page.
Here is why. The attacks are not what turns into panic disorder. The loop is: an attack happens, the fear of the next one rises, that fear makes the body more reactive and the attention more tuned to it, and the next attack arrives more easily. The fear of panic is the engine, not the panic. And that loop happens to be one of the best-understood, most treatable things in the whole of mental health. Cognitive behavioural therapy for panic — learning what the sensations actually are, then deliberately approaching rather than avoiding them — has strong effect sizes and, unusually, holds up years later. Most people need weeks, not years.
Two honest limits. First, this reading assumes a doctor has looked at the physical side, and if nobody has, that comes first — not because you are probably ill but because ruling it out is what lets everything else proceed. Caffeine, alcohol withdrawal, some medications and an overactive thyroid all produce a near-identical set of sensations, and a doctor checks those before anything else. Second, a middle band is the most sensitive to which month you happened to take it in. Retake it in four weeks. If the surges and the watching are still there, take the result to someone while the avoidance column is still low, because that column is the one that gets expensive.
What people with this result notice
Four of the eight notes the test writes for this type; the rest come with your own result.
🔁 The loop is the target, not the attacks
Panic becomes a condition through the fear of the next one: the watching makes sensations easier to find, finding them raises the alarm, the alarm produces more sensations. That loop is among the most treatable things in mental health — approach-based therapy for panic has strong effects that hold up years later, usually in weeks rather than years.
⚕️ Have the physical side checked, if nobody has
A first episode, chest pain, or anything that felt different from the others belongs with a doctor first. Not because you are probably ill — because ruling it out is what lets everything else proceed, and because thyroid, medication and withdrawal effects mimic this almost exactly.
What produces this result
Every answer feeds one overall score, and that score falls into one of 3 bands. The bands are levels of the same thing, not different kinds of person.

This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. A high score is a reason to talk to someone who can assess properly.
