The science behind it

Research does not treat anxiety as one thing. The patterns clinicians separate differ less in how much fear is present than in what the fear attaches to: everything in general, being seen, the body's alarm, the body's meaning, or one particular person. The treatments that help differ along the same lines, which is why generic anxiety advice so often slides off — it is usually aimed at a shape that is not yours. This check borrows that logic without borrowing the categories: twelve ordinary situations, five honest reactions to each, and the path your answers choose most often. It is not a diagnostic instrument and is not modelled on any licensed scale. Five shapes are not five diagnoses. What it gives you is a more accurate word than anxious, which is what lets you know what to look for and what to ask. Read the full methodology →

This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. It reads how often certain experiences happen to you and compares that with other people; only a clinician can assess what it means for you. If the result worries you, take it to one.

Common questions

How is this different from the Anxiety Check?

They answer different questions. The Anxiety Check measures intensity: how often worry, tension and avoidance have shown up in the last two weeks, scored into a band. This one measures shape: what the anxiety attaches to, scored as whichever of five paths your answers choose most often. It says nothing about severity — you can come out as any of the five at any level. Intensity tells you whether to do something; shape tells you what. The pair is more useful than either alone.

Are these five an official classification?

No. Clinicians do have diagnostic categories in this territory, and these are not them: a diagnosis takes a history, a conversation, and a trained person, and none of that happens on a results page. What the five give you is language. Anxious is one word for five quite different daily experiences, and having the more accurate one is what lets you search for the right thing, ask the right question, and notice when the advice you are being given was written for someone else.

I recognise myself in two of them.

Most people do, and the five overlap by nature. Social anxiety sets off panic attacks. Health anxiety and the everything-anxiety are usually the same what-if pointed at different material. Relationship anxiety is often attachment showing up as fear. The result names the loudest path only; it does not claim the others are absent. Read the bars under the name — the second one is usually part of the answer.
