The science behind it

Persistent tiredness is a symptom, not a condition, and the clinical habit when someone presents with it is to separate the causes before treating any of them: sleep that is too short or too broken, a load with no recovery built into it, low mood, and a medical cause — anaemia, thyroid, apnoea, vitamin D or B12, blood sugar, medication — that a blood test and an examination can find. This check follows the same four-way split with twelve situational items written for MoodyWonder, and reports which one is loudest along with how much of the other three is in play. It is not the PHQ-9, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, or any licensed fatigue instrument, and it does not claim to be. It cannot diagnose anything. What it can do is stop you spending another six months fixing the wrong one. Read the full methodology →

This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. It reads how often certain experiences happen to you and compares that with other people; only a clinician can assess what it means for you. If the result worries you, take it to one.

Common questions

I sleep eight hours and I'm still tired. What is that?

Usually not a duration problem. Eight hours that are broken, badly timed, or spent in a body that keeps waking do not deliver eight hours of rest, and sleep is also the first thing that looks wrong when the real cause is load, mood, or something medical. That is what this check is for: it separates the four instead of assuming the first one.

Can this tell me if something is medically wrong?

No. No questionnaire can. What it can do is tell you whether your answers look like the profile people bring to a doctor, and list the ordinary things a doctor checks first — iron, thyroid, vitamin D and B12, blood sugar, sleep apnoea, medication side effects. One blood draw rules most of that in or out, which is worth more than another month of guessing.

What if more than one of them is true?

That is the normal case, not the exception. Short sleep lowers mood, low mood wrecks sleep, and both get worse under load. The result names the loudest one because you have to start somewhere, but read the bars underneath it — a second bar nearly as tall is telling you something the headline cannot.

When is tiredness a reason to see someone regardless of this result?

When it has lasted more than a few weeks without lifting, or when it arrives with weight change you did not intend, fever, night sweats, or breathlessness. Those are a doctor's business rather than a quiz's, whatever this page says.
