Jealousy feels like information about your partner β about that colleague, that ex, that laugh at the party. It is usually information about you: about what you expect to happen and how fast you expect it. That is not a comfortable thing to hear and it is the most useful thing on this page.
What is usually going on
The alarm is calibrated for a past relationship. Someone once did the thing, and the system that noticed it too late has been rebuilt to notice it earlier. It now fires on evidence that would not have registered before β which means it fires on almost nothing, and the person in front of you is being tried for someone else's offence.
You do not believe you are enough to keep them. Jealousy is often self-worth in disguise: the fear is not that they will meet someone, it is that when they do, the comparison will go the other way. Reassurance about the other person does not touch this, because the other person was never the problem.
Something is actually off, and you are being told it is jealousy. Sometimes the thing you noticed is real. A partner who has moved the phone face-down, who is vague about evenings, who calls your questions controlling before you have asked them β that is not your alarm misfiring. Do not let this page or anyone else talk you out of a real signal. The test for the difference: are you seeing a pattern, or a feeling?
What to do tonight
- Separate the feeling from the evidence. Write two columns: what you felt, and what you actually saw. Most jealousy has a full first column and an empty second one. Some does not, and that matters.
- Do not interrogate. The questions asked from inside jealousy do not want answers; they want the feeling to stop, and no answer stops it for long.
- Say the fear rather than the accusation. "I got scared I'm not enough" is survivable. "Who was that" starts a fight about the wrong thing.
What it depends on
Jealousy is where trust and attachment meet. A person who trusts slowly and watches hard will feel it more, and more often, than one who trusts by default β and neither is wrong; they are different settings. Knowing your own setting is what lets you tell a real signal from a false alarm, which is the only skill that actually helps here.
