Relationships

a straight answer, then a way to find out

Is my relationship healthy?

Healthy relationships have conflict, boredom, and bad weeks. What they do not have is contempt, fear, or a version of you that keeps getting smaller. Check for those three, not for happiness.

The question usually gets asked in one of two moods: a good relationship that has hit a dull stretch and a worried person wondering if dull means wrong, or a bad relationship that the person already knows is bad and is looking for permission to say so. The signs below work for both. They are drawn from the research on what actually predicts whether couples stay together, which is narrower and less romantic than the internet suggests.

What is usually going on

Ordinary friction being mistaken for a problem. You fight sometimes, you are bored sometimes, you do not always want to be in the same room. None of that predicts anything. Long-term couples fight about the same handful of things for decades. What the research finds matters is the repair โ€” whether, after the fight, someone reaches back.

Contempt. Eye-rolling, mockery, the sigh that says you again. Of everything studied, this is the single strongest predictor that a relationship ends. If it is there, in either direction, it is the first thing to look at, and it does not fix itself.

Fear. Not of the person โ€” of their reaction. If you check your words before saying them, if you manage their moods more than you share your own, if there are things you have stopped raising because of what raising them costs, the relationship has a problem regardless of how good the good days are.

You, getting smaller. Fewer friends, fewer opinions, fewer things you do that are yours. A healthy relationship makes people more themselves. One that makes you less is not, whatever else is true about it.

What to do tonight

  • Check the three: contempt, fear, shrinking. If none is present, the relationship is probably fine and going through a stretch. If one is, that is the thing to look at, not the overall question.
  • Think about the last fight. Did anyone reach back afterward โ€” a hand, a joke, a sorry, that was me? Repair is the whole game. If it happens, the fights are not the danger.
  • Say one thing you have been not-saying. Small, safe, tonight. How it lands is data.

What it depends on

Whether a fight ends in repair or in silence depends on the two conflict styles in the room. One person who goes for the fix and one who goes quiet can love each other completely and never finish an argument. Knowing your own style is the first half. Comparing it with theirs is the second โ€” and that is a reading you can do together, from both of your own results.

Which one are you? Find out in two minutes

The clearest predictor of whether a relationship lasts is not how often you fight but what happens when you do. Your conflict style is the half of that you can measure alone โ€” and with a partner's results, the whole thing.

People also ask

What are the signs of an unhealthy relationship?

Contempt in either direction, fear of the other person's reaction, and a shrinking sense of yourself โ€” fewer friends, fewer opinions, fewer things that are yours. Fighting and boredom on their own are not signs of anything.

Is it normal to fight a lot in a relationship?

Frequency matters less than what happens after. Couples who fight often and repair well last. Couples who never fight and never repair often do not.

How do I know if I should stay?

If the three signs are absent and the relationship has a dull stretch, stay and do something about the stretch. If contempt or fear is present and has been for a while, that is a different question, and it has its own page here.
