Am I Sleep Deprived · type

The Warning Light

Well short, night after night, and the body and the day are both saying so — the first thing here is safety, and the rest can wait behind it.

What this type is

Your answers over the last two weeks describe a serious and sustained shortage: the hours are well under what a body needs, the body is pushing back hard — sleep arriving the second you stop moving, mornings you cannot surface from, drowsiness sitting down with you in the afternoon — and the day is paying in attention, memory and temper. At this level you did not need a questionnaire to know something is wrong, and the useful thing a page can do is put the pieces in the right order.

Safety goes first, and it is not a figure of speech. Being awake for long enough impairs reaction time, attention and judgement to a degree that measures in the same range as being over the legal limit for alcohol — this is a finding from the driving research, not a metaphor for how it feels, and drowsy driving kills people every year in exactly the way that comparison predicts. If you drive, the practical version is simple: at this score you do not drive tired, you do not trust the trick of opening a window or turning up the radio, and if you catch yourself drifting or losing stretches of a route, that is the trip ending, not a reason to concentrate harder. Microsleeps do not announce themselves, and the person having one does not know it happened. Everything else on this page can wait behind this paragraph.

Then the hours themselves, which come before any advice about arranging them. At this depth sleep hygiene is beside the point — nobody here needs a cooler room, they need four more hours. Recovery is real but partial and it is not instant: a couple of long nights hand back a good deal of the sharpness, several weeks of consistently adequate sleep hand back more, and a single enormous Saturday hands back less than it promises while shifting your clock enough to make Sunday night and Monday morning worse. Add the time back across several nights rather than in one block, and keep your wake time roughly stable while you do it. One pattern is worth checking before you change anything: if the hours are already adequate and this score is still this high, duration is probably not the answer, because apnoea, anaemia, thyroid trouble, low iron or B12, several medications and depression all produce exactly this profile and none of them respond to an earlier bedtime.

And for a lot of people at this level the hours are not theirs to give. A newborn, a person you care for, a rota that rotates, two jobs, an exam term, a commute that takes both ends of the day. Telling any of them to go to bed earlier is useless and a little insulting, so here is what is left instead: split the night with someone if there is anyone to split it with, even on alternating nights. Take twenty minutes in the afternoon if you can get them — short naps are genuinely restorative and do not carry the grogginess of long ones. Move whatever needs real judgement out of your worst hours into your best ones and let the mechanical work fill the rest. Be deliberate rather than heroic about driving. And name it accurately while it lasts: this is a period of depletion with a cause, not evidence that you have become forgetful, short-tempered or incapable — the second reading is the one that does lasting damage, and it is the one people reach for. One last thing, because severe sleep loss pushes mood down hard: if the tiredness has come with thoughts of not wanting to be here, that is a today conversation rather than a this-month one — a crisis line, a doctor, a person you trust. Please do not wait out the sleep debt for that one.

What people with this result notice

Four of the eight notes the test writes for this type; the rest come with your own result.

🚗 Do not drive tired — this is the safety one

Enough hours awake impairs reaction time, attention and judgement in the same range as being over the legal alcohol limit. That is a research finding, not a metaphor. Opening a window and turning up the radio does nothing. If you catch yourself drifting or losing stretches of a route, the trip is over — microsleeps do not announce themselves, and the person having one does not know it happened.

💤 Sleep first, advice second

At this depth nothing else on this page competes with the hours. A cooler room, a screen curfew and a wind-down routine are all aimed at people trying to sleep and failing; you are not failing to sleep, you are not getting the chance. Everything below assumes the first move is more hours, however unglamorously they arrive.

What produces this result

Every answer feeds one overall score, and that score falls into one of 3 bands. The bands are levels of the same thing, not different kinds of person.

The hoursWhat the body does about itWhat it costs

This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. A high score is a reason to talk to someone who can assess properly.
