Why Can't I Sleep · type

The Uneven Night

Not every night and not every component — one part of the night is giving way, and which part it is decides what actually helps.

What this type is

Your answers put you above what most adults report on at least one of the three components over the last two weeks, without all of them being loud. That is the ordinary shape of disturbed sleep: it usually fails at one point rather than everywhere. The single most useful thing on this page is the tallest bar above, because the advice that works for one component is close to useless for the others, and most general sleep advice is aimed at whichever one the writer had.

If onset is the tall bar, this is largely a mind problem wearing a sleep costume. The stretch after lights-out has become the only quiet slot in your day, so everything unfinished arrives in it. What helps is unglamorous: get out of bed when you have been lying there a while rather than staying and practising being awake in it, give the worrying a fifteen-minute slot in the afternoon so it has somewhere else to go, and turn the clock away — the arithmetic about how many hours are left never once helped anyone sleep. If maintenance is the tall bar, look at the physical suspects first. Alcohol is the big one: it gets you under faster and then breaks the second half of the night, which is why the 3 a.m. waking so often follows the evening drink. A too-warm room does the same thing, because you need to lose heat to stay under. And night-time anxiety is real, and it arrives in a body that cannot distract itself.

If daytime is the tall bar while onset and maintenance are not, take that seriously in a different direction: it suggests the problem may not be insomnia at all. Being sleepy and foggy after nights you did not experience as broken is the profile of sleep apnoea, and also of anaemia, thyroid trouble, several medications and depression. None of those respond to sleep hygiene, and all of them respond to being looked at. The honest limit on everything above: a middle score is the most sensitive to the particular fortnight you took it in. Retake it in a month. If it is still uneven, that is a pattern worth taking to someone.

📊 The tallest bar decides what to do

Onset trouble is mostly a mind problem in a sleep costume. Maintenance trouble usually has a physical suspect behind it. Daytime cost without the other two is a reason to see a doctor rather than try a technique. Most general sleep advice targets whichever one the writer happened to have.

🗓️ One bad fortnight, or the shape of your year?

A middle band is the most sensitive to the two weeks you took it in. A deadline, a cold, a trip, a grieving month — all of these raise these numbers in people who usually sleep fine. Retake it in a month. If it is still uneven, it is a pattern.

What produces this result

Every answer feeds one overall score, and that score falls into one of 3 bands. The bands are levels of the same thing, not different kinds of person.

This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. A high score is a reason to talk to someone who can assess properly.
