The science behind it

Introversion–extraversion is the most replicated dimension in personality science, and it is a continuum: most people fall near the middle, and the label at either end describes a lean, not a category. Modern accounts split it into facets — how much energy company gives or takes, how much stimulation feels good, how solitude is experienced, how readily you express, how you recover — and people often lean one way on some and the other way on the rest. Twenty items on a slider, five facets, written for MoodyWonder; percentiles against provisional norms. Read the full methodology →

Common questions

Can you be both?

Most people are. The middle of the continuum is where the largest group sits, and even a clear introvert usually has one facet — expression, or stimulation — leaning the other way. The result shows the facets separately so you can see which parts of you lean which way.

Is this the same as the MBTI I/E?

Related, not the same. The MBTI treats it as one of two boxes; the trait literature this follows treats it as a continuous dimension with facets. If you have an MBTI result here, the two will usually agree on direction and disagree on how far.

Does introversion mean shy?

No. Shyness is fear of social judgement; introversion is about where energy comes from and how much stimulation feels good. There are outgoing introverts and shy extroverts. If social fear is the thing you are actually asking about, the social anxiety check is the better test.
