Stress, sleep & the mind

a straight answer, then a way to find out

Why am I always tired?

Usually because you are not sleeping as well as you think, or because you are carrying a load — stress, worry, a job that empties you — that sleep alone does not repay. And sometimes because something medical is going on, which a page cannot rule out and a blood test can.

Two things first. One: if the tiredness is new, unexplained, and has lasted more than a few weeks, see a doctor and get bloods done — thyroid, iron, B12, glucose. That is not an overreaction; it is the cheapest, fastest way to rule out the things a page cannot see. Two: if that comes back clear, which it usually does, the tiredness is almost always one of the four things below, and they can be told apart.

What is usually going on

Your sleep is worse than your hours suggest. Eight hours in bed with three wakings, a screen until midnight, and a mind that takes forty minutes to switch off is not eight hours of sleep. People rate sleep by the clock and miss the quality entirely. This is the most common cause and the most fixable.

You are paying a stress tax. A nervous system that is braced all day — for the meeting, the message, the thing you are worrying about — burns energy that sleep does not repay, because it is still braced at 2 a.m. The tiredness is real and sleep is not the lever. The load is.

You are burned out, and tired is the first symptom you noticed. Exhaustion that rest does not touch, alongside a flatness about work you used to care about. If the tiredness is specifically resistant to holidays, look at the burnout page next.

Something medical. Thyroid, iron, sleep apnoea, a medication, low mood. These are not rare, they are not shameful, and they are not diagnosable here. If the tiredness has no pattern — not worse after bad nights, not better after good ones — that is the strongest signal to get it checked.

What to do tonight

  • Book the blood test if the tiredness is new or patternless. Do it before trying anything else; it saves months.
  • Tonight, one change only: a fixed wake time, kept tomorrow even if the night was bad. Wake time is the anchor the whole sleep system sets itself by, and it is the single most effective lever that costs nothing.
  • Notice whether you are tired or braced. Braced people describe themselves as tired and are actually tense. If your shoulders are up right now, that is the answer, and the fix is not more sleep.

What it depends on

Whether the tiredness is sleep, stress, burnout, or medical decides everything, and they are hard to separate from inside because the feeling is the same. The sleep test measures the first with some precision — not hours, but the quality, the wakings, the morning — and if the score is fine, it has told you something useful: the sleep is not the problem, so stop trying to fix it there.

Which one are you? Find out in two minutes

Most people rate their sleep by hours and miss what the test measures: how long it takes to fall asleep, how often you wake, how you feel at nine a.m. Twenty questions, and you will know whether the tiredness is a sleep problem or something the sleep cannot fix.

People also ask

Why am I tired all the time even after sleeping?

Either the sleep is worse than the hours suggest — wakings, a slow switch-off, a screen too late — or the tiredness is not a sleep debt at all but a stress or burnout load that sleep does not repay. A fixed wake time tests the first; a rested weekend tests the second.

When should I see a doctor about being tired?

When it is new, has lasted more than a few weeks, and has no pattern — not worse after bad nights or better after good ones. Thyroid, iron, B12 and glucose are a single blood test, and they rule out the things a page cannot.

What is the fastest way to stop feeling tired?

There is no fast way, but the most effective single lever is a fixed wake time kept every day, including after bad nights and on weekends. It resets the system the rest of sleep depends on, and it costs nothing.
