The definition is the easy part and probably not what you came for. The entry on one-sided relationships does the conceptual work β communal versus exchange, why every close relationship is unequal at any given moment, and the three markers that separate an unequal season from a fixed imbalance. Read it if you want the concept. This page assumes you already have a specific person in mind and have been running the question for months.
What is usually going on
Start with the uncomfortable bit: if you typed this, you are probably not after a definition. You are after permission to stop, or after somebody telling you that you are being unfair to a friend who is only busy. Neither can be handed over from here. What can be done is to untangle the two things that keep getting mixed up.
The arithmetic is much clearer than the feeling. Feelings about a friendship are noisy β one good evening resets them for a month, which is how a decade goes by. The arithmetic is not noisy. Scroll back and count who sent the first message in the last ten exchanges, and who proposed the last five plans. Most people find a number they already knew and had been talking themselves out of.
Being the carrier is usually not new. If you are also the one who organises the group, remembers the birthdays, checks in after the hospital appointment and notices who has gone quiet, then this friendship is where the pattern hurts rather than where it started.
They are almost certainly not doing it deliberately. This is what makes it hard to act on. Someone who has never been the initiator often has no idea what initiating costs, because plans have always simply appeared in their calendar. Very few one-sided friendships contain a villain, which is exactly why they can run for ten years without anybody stopping them.
You may be over-functioning. The less flattering possibility, and it deserves a sentence. Some people give a great deal more than was asked for, early and unprompted, and then read the resulting gap as proof of the other person's indifference. The imbalance is real either way. The story about what it means is sometimes wrong, and it is worth checking before it becomes the reason.
The asymmetry may be in kind rather than in effort. The version almost nobody considers. You want a close friendship; they want company on a Thursday. Both of you may be giving everything you have available at the level you understand the friendship to be β and you are keeping score in a currency they are not spending. That is still a mismatch and it still hurts. It is not neglect, and the difference matters, because a mismatch cannot be corrected by the other person trying harder.
What to do
- Do the count before any conversation. Ten messages, five plans. It converts a mood into one sentence you can actually say out loud.
- Say that sentence once, without the case attached. "I notice I'm usually the one who suggests things β is that just how it's landed?" A friendship survives that. It does not survive the version with five years of evidence stapled to it, because evidence turns a question into a charge.
- Then stop initiating and let it be quiet. Not as a secret test β you already said the thing, so this is information you have a right to collect. Six weeks is a reasonable window: longer than it feels bearable, shorter than the natural silence of an adult friendship.
- Consider reclassifying rather than ending. Most one-sided friendships do not need to end. They need to move from close friend to someone I see twice a year, and most of the pain comes from continuing to invest at a level the friendship does not return.
Worth being honest about what the carrying costs, because it is usually the reason this goes on so long rather than the reason it stops. Carrying a friendship keeps you from finding out where you stand, and not finding out is the whole point: as long as you are organising everything, the question of whether they would choose you never has to be answered. That is a genuinely comfortable arrangement and it is expensive. The resentment does not stay in this friendship either β it leaks into the ones that are fine, because a person who has been quietly over-giving for years starts auditing everybody.
What it depends on
Whether this is a fact about one friend or your default setting is the thing worth knowing, and it is answerable. If the same shape shows up at work, with family and with a partner β you absorb, you accommodate, the resentment arrives late and sideways β then this friendship is a symptom, and replacing this friend changes nothing.
The Boundaries Check reads four boundaries separately and says which is most open. Someone whose responsibility boundary is open ends up doing the organising; someone whose emotional boundary is open ends up holding the moods. Those are different problems with different repairs, and people are routinely wrong about which one is theirs. The longer version is the entry on personal boundaries.
