Relationships

a straight answer, then a way to find out

Should I text my ex?

Not tonight. Whatever you want to say will still be true in the morning, and almost nothing sent to an ex after ten p.m. was meant the way it reads at nine a.m.

The urge to text an ex almost always arrives with a good reason attached β€” a birthday, a song, something they would find funny, a question about a thing they still have of yours. The reason is usually real. It is also usually not why you want to send it.

What is usually going on

You miss the person. Ordinary, human, and it does not mean the relationship should resume. Missing someone is what happens after you spent a lot of time with them. It is a measure of the time, not the fit.

You miss being wanted, and they are the last person who did. Loneliness in a specific shape. This one is worth noticing because the ex is a stand-in: any reply would do, and any reply will reopen a thing that closed for reasons. A night with a friend fixes more of it than a text does.

Something is genuinely unfinished. A conversation that never happened, an apology you owe, a practical matter. These deserve a message β€” a short, daylight one, that asks for one thing and does not fish.

You are testing whether the door is still open. The most honest version and the one people least want to admit. If that is it, ask yourself the question directly instead of sending a casual message that hopes to find out sideways: do I actually want to get back together, and has anything changed that would make it different this time? If nothing has changed, the door being open is not good news.

What to do tonight

  • Do not send it tonight. Write it in your notes app if you have to. The delay is not a rule; it is a filter, and most messages do not survive it.
  • Tomorrow, if it is still there, ask which of the four it is. Only the third gets sent, and only as a plain question.
  • If it is the fourth, say the real thing to yourself out loud before saying anything to them.

What it depends on

Some people close a relationship and it stays closed. Others keep a hand on the door for months, and every quiet evening is a reason to check whether it moved. The difference is not weakness. It is how your attachment system handles loss β€” whether separation is something you tolerate or something you keep trying to undo.

If you have texted an ex more than once and regretted it each time, that is a pattern, and patterns can be read.

Which one are you? Find out in two minutes

Whether an ended relationship keeps pulling you back is partly about the relationship and partly about how you are wired to handle loss. Attachment style is the second half, and it takes two minutes to see.

People also ask

Is it bad to text my ex?

It is not bad. It is usually not useful. The message rarely gets what it was actually sent for, and it resets a clock you had already started.

Should I text my ex happy birthday?

If you are on genuinely friendly terms and would send it without hoping for anything back, yes. If you would check your phone afterwards, it is not a birthday message.

Why do I keep wanting to text my ex?

Because the relationship ended and the habit of reaching for them did not. Habits outlast their reasons by months. The wanting is real; it is not information about the relationship.
