This question usually arrives already half argued down, because every visible fact is against it: there is a person in the house, there are plans in the week, nothing is wrong. So it is worth saying first that the word is not disqualified by company. Loneliness has been measured since the 1970s as a distance between the connection you have and the connection you want, and a distance can be large in a full room.
Two different questions get asked here and they want different pages. Why it happens inside a couple — what produces it and what repairs it — is the other one, and that is where to go if you already know the answer is yes. This page is about whether the answer is yes: whether the word fits what you have been feeling, and which part of it is actually short.
Three things the word covers, and only one is a number
- Contact. How much. Days with no conversation that was not logistics, weekends with nothing in them, nobody starting anything you did not start. This is the only quantity in the set and the shallowest member of it. Inside a relationship it is frequently high, which is exactly why people conclude the word cannot apply to them.
- Being known. Whether anybody currently holds the thing that is happening to you. Not your news — the thing. If there is nobody who could be rung at a bad hour, if you said something difficult out loud and the subject moved on, if you have wondered how long it would take for anyone to notice you had gone quiet, this is the short one. It is also the one that decides what the rest means.
- Belonging. Whether there is anywhere you are expected. This third one almost never gets named inside a couple, and it is where the specific flavour often comes from: a life going on, correctly, with you present and not quite in it. Nothing in the week has a place that is yours; you are adjacent to a good arrangement.
The shape to look for is plenty of contact with nothing underneath it. That is the commonest hidden version and the hardest to say out loud, because stated plainly it sounds like ingratitude. Loneliness has the research behind the three, and the difference between lonely and alone has the distinction that stops a full calendar counting as evidence against you.
Four things that feel identical from inside
Before taking the word, the look-alikes are worth ruling out, because three of them want the opposite response.
Depletion. Exhaustion flattens responsiveness in both directions and then everything reads as distance. Whether you are burned out or the relationship is wrong is worth settling first, because every repair below assumes you have something to spend.
A preference for solitude, read as a symptom. Wanting more time by yourself and feeling unknown are different states that sometimes arrive together. If the appealing thing is an empty evening rather than a particular conversation, the shortage is energy.
The dull stretch. Long relationships have flat months with nothing diagnostic in them. Boredom is answered by doing something; this is not, and that difference is the test.
A month with an event in it. A move, a bereavement, a new baby, a new job, an illness. Any of those produces this reading on its own, and then the result is describing a circumstance rather than the relationship — and circumstances settle.
What to do this week
- Run the one-sentence test. Pick somebody who already knows you to any degree and replace one fine with something true about this week. Not the whole account — one sentence. Whether that is possible, and what happens when you do it, is the most informative minute available to you.
- Try it with your partner first, as a thing rather than a complaint. Something happened this week that I have not told you opens. The word lonely closes, because it lands as a verdict on the hours they have put in and the reply is a defence of those hours.
- Count what you have told them this month rather than what they have asked. If the honest number is very small, the first move is yours and it is smaller than it looks.
- Put one repeating thing in the diary that nobody has to arrange each time. A fixed class, a standing Wednesday. Low friction beats quality time, largely because it removes the step where somebody has to decide to ask.
- Do not fix this by meeting more people. It tops up the part you are least short of, and when it fails the failure gets read as proof that the problem is you. Why more friends does not fix it sets out the mechanism.
What it depends on
What the word means for you depends on which bar is tall, and the three are not interchangeable. A thin month with somebody who knows you is uncomfortable and not costly. A full month with nobody who knows anything is the version that accumulates, and it is the one that reads as fine from outside and on any single summary number.
The loneliness check reads the three over the last month and sets them against other people's, which matters more here than usual. That comparison is precisely what you cannot run from inside a relationship, because the only reference point to hand is a person who is in the room and therefore appears to have settled the question.
