Am I a Hypochondriac · type
The Watchtower
The loop is running but it has not taken the month. This is the useful moment, and the useful thing to know is that both kinds of checking make it worse.
What this type is
Your answers describe a pattern that has formed without yet taking over: attention that keeps returning to the body, sensations that get read at the serious end more often than the ordinary end, and a set of things you do to settle the question — a search, a second look at the same spot, a partner asked in a voice trying to sound casual, or an appointment you keep thinking about. What your answers do not describe is a month organised around it. That gap is what makes this the useful band to be in, and it is also what makes the next paragraph the most important thing on this page.
Here is the mechanism, and it is worth reading slowly because it is counterintuitive. Every attempt to settle the question makes the question louder next time. When you check and the answer is reassuring, relief arrives — genuine, immediate, complete. And then it decays. Fast. The calm that a clear answer buys has a half-life measured in hours at first and eventually in minutes, because each check quietly teaches the system that this was a thing worth checking, which raises the alarm, which produces more sensations, which need checking. The loop does not run on being wrong about medicine. It runs on the relief. That is why arguing with yourself about whether the lump is anything never works and why a change in what you do works well. And the other direction is the same loop wearing the opposite clothes: putting off the appointment, refusing to look at the spot, changing the subject when your own health comes up. Avoidance buys the identical hit of relief and teaches the identical lesson. If you recognise yourself in one of those two descriptions and not the other, look again — most people who have one have had periods of the other.
Two limits. First, this reading assumes that the symptoms you have been watching have had one proper look from a doctor. If they have not, that comes before anything on this page. Not because you are probably ill — because a question that has never been asked properly cannot be settled by any amount of reasoning, and because untreated illness is not made less likely by anxiety. Second, a middle band is the most sensitive to which month you happened to take it in. A scare, a friend's diagnosis, a result you waited three weeks for — any of them lifts these numbers in someone who would otherwise score at the bottom. Retake it in a month. If it is still here, it is a pattern rather than a fortnight, and the treatment for the pattern is short and good.
What people with this result notice
Four of the eight notes the test writes for this type; the rest come with your own result.
🔁 Both directions of checking make it worse
Checking buys relief, the relief decays, and each round teaches the system that this was worth checking — so the next round comes sooner. That is the loop. Avoiding does the same thing: putting off the appointment, refusing to look, changing the subject all buy the identical hit of relief and teach the identical lesson. They are one mechanism with two tactics, and people flip between them. This is the single most useful thing on this page.
⚕️ You can have this and be ill as well
Nothing here says your symptoms are imagined. People with health anxiety get sick at the same rate as everyone else, and anxious noticing has never protected anyone from a real diagnosis. Anything new, persistent or changing deserves one proper look from a doctor. One, properly — which is different from nine half-looks and from none at all.
What produces this result
Every answer feeds one overall score, and that score falls into one of 3 bands. The bands are levels of the same thing, not different kinds of person.
Noticing the bodyWhat the sensation meantWhat you did about it
This is a screening-style questionnaire, not a diagnosis. A high score is a reason to talk to someone who can assess properly.
Is this you?
The Am I a Hypochondriac test is 15 questions and takes about 3 minutes. Your result carries your own numbers, not just the name.
