for two people

A couples test that doesn't give you a number

Four minutes each. You get the patterns that will actually come up between you, named, with something to do about each one — and no percentage, because there is no honest way to calculate it.

What this is not

It is not a compatibility percentage. If that is what you came for, it is worth knowing why you will not find one here — and not only from us. The largest study of the question fed 43 longitudinal datasets and 11,196 couples through machine learning, and found that once you know what each partner is like on their own, combining the two profiles adds almost nothing to predicting how the relationship goes. Every site showing you a number is showing you a number it made up.

It is not a verdict on the relationship. Nothing here will tell you to stay or leave, and nothing here has the information to. What it can do is name a pattern accurately enough that you both recognise it, which is a different and more useful job.

It is not a fun quiz. There is a real place for those and this is not one. If you want the light version, our spirit animal test is genuinely trying to be fun and says so.

How it works

1

You take the attachment test

Twelve questions, about four minutes. It measures two things — how much you monitor for a partner pulling away, and how much closeness itself feels like pressure. Those two numbers do more work here than anything else.

2

You send them a link

No account needed on either side. They answer the same twelve questions and nothing is shared until they have.

3

You both get the same reading

The patterns between you, ordered by how much they are likely to come up, each with one thing for each of you to do differently. You see the same page they do.

What you get

Up to eight named patterns, depending on which tests you have both taken. The attachment test alone gives you the one with the most evidence behind it.

  • ·The pursue–withdraw reading — the best-documented dynamic between two people, and the only one here that is a genuine interaction rather than two individual results placed side by side.
  • ·Your pair archetype — a description of the two of you together, not a rating. There are ten and none of them is the good one.
  • ·A move for each of you, per pattern. Specific enough to do on a Tuesday, not "communicate more".
  • ·An honest count — how many things tend to be easy and how many take work. A count, not a score.

What they see

The patterns between you — not your scores. Your partner does not see that your attachment anxiety sits at the 82nd percentile, and you do not see theirs. That is deliberate: a number like that can be used in an argument, and a self-knowledge tool should not hand anyone that. If you both want to swap the raw numbers, that is a switch you each turn on, and it is off by default.

Common questions

Is this couples test free?

Yes. Both of you take a twelve-question test, both of you see the full reading, and neither of you needs an account. The optional paid report is a separate thing and nothing on this page is behind it.

Why won't you give us a compatibility score?

Because there is no defensible way to calculate one. Joel and colleagues (2020) put 43 longitudinal couples datasets through machine learning and found that the combination of two partners' traits adds almost nothing beyond what each person's own traits already predict. A percentage would be a number we invented, and we would rather say that than print it.

Do we both need an account?

No. Neither of you does. An account only exists to keep results across devices.

What if we get a difficult result?

Then you have some specific information and two things to try, which is better than the same situation without them. No pattern here means a relationship is failing — the pursue–withdraw loop, the most common difficult finding, is one that a very large number of couples live inside and work on successfully.

Can we do this if we are not a couple?

Yes. It works for friends, siblings and co-parents, and several of the patterns — boundaries, conflict repair, who opens up first — are not romantic at all.

How is this different from a zodiac compatibility test?

This one is built from your answers rather than your birthdays, and it declines to give you a number. If you want the astrological version we have that too, clearly labelled as what it is.
