What this type is
Under pressure your answers reach first for freeze: when it gets loud you go still — not calm, paused. The words do not come, the body stops, and the situation passes over you while you wait for it to be over. This is the oldest of the stress responses and the most misread, because from outside the stillness looks like agreement, or indifference, or strength, and it is none of those. It is a nervous system that has decided the safest move is no move.
What it gives you is that you do not make things worse. You do not say the thing that cannot be unsaid or leave the room in a way that ends it; you wait, and waiting is sometimes exactly right. Statues are the people who are still there when the storm has passed.
The friction is what the stillness costs afterwards and what it signals during. The thing you did not say in the moment gets rehearsed for days; the agreement you appeared to give gets held against you; and partners of statues describe the silence as the loneliest thing in the relationship. The practices that help are small and physical: move — a hand, a step, a breath out — before trying to speak; and give yourself one sentence to say when frozen, prepared in advance, such as "I have gone quiet; I am still here and I need a minute."
